Correct by teaching

The George Long translation of 1862:

If thou art able, correct by teaching those who do wrong. But if thou canst not, remember that indulgence is given to thee for this purpose. Marcus Aurelius.  Meditations.  Book 9.

Chrystal's 2017 rendering based on the Foulis translation of 1742:

If you can, teach men better. If not, remember that the virtue of charity was given you to be used in such a case. Marcus Aurelius.  Meditations.  Book 9.

Image: Byzantine ivory casket plaque depicting the King of Ai brought to Joshua for judgment, 900 - 1000 CE now in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Apparently Joshua chose not to apply the virtue of charity and the king was hanged.
