Avoiding obstacles

Based on the George Long translation of 1862:

[If] A cucumber is bitter, throw it away. [If]There are briars in the road, turn aside from them. This is enough. Do not add, And why were such things made in the world? For thou wilt be ridiculed by a man who is acquainted with nature... Marcus Aurelius.  Meditations.  Book 8.

Based on the Foulis translation of 1742:

Is the gourd bitter? Put it from you. Are there thorns in the way? Walk aside. That is enough. Do not add, Why were such things brought into the world? The naturalist would laugh at you...Marcus Aurelius.  Meditations.  Book 8.
