Am I doing anything? I do it with reference to the good of mankind. Marcus Aurelius. Meditations. Book 8.
Image: Fresco depicting a woman musician from Herculaneum, Roman, 30-40 CE. This third-style fresco apparently shows the preparation for a musical performance. A female musician sits on a couch (lectus) with an elaborate coverlet, in her left hand she holds a five-stringed lyre, while with her right hand she tunes a small harp that is lying on the couch. Three other women gaze intently at her, one wearing a garland; these may be singers. Now in the Naples, National Archaeological Museum, courtesy of Barbara McManus.
