Products of the Grand and Beautiful

The lion's gaping jaws, and that which is poisonous, and every harmful thing, as a thorn, as mud, are after-products of the grand and beautiful.  Marcus Aurelius.  Meditations.  Book 6.

Image: Coseup of the Roman sarcophagus from the tomb of the Roman general Flavius Valerius Jovinus born in Durocortorum at the beginning of the 4th century CE in the Musée Saint-Remi in Reims, France.  He prepares to pierce a lion with his spear, representing the mythical hunt frequently found on Roman sarcophagi of the 3rd century CE. The original date of the sarcophagus is estimated to be 265 CE.  Therefore, it must have been reused from an earlier burial.
