Ignorance and conceit should not be stronger than wisdom

It is shameful then if ignorance and conceit should be stronger than wisdom.  Marcus Aurelius.  Meditations.  Book 5.

Although this illustration by Christa Hook depicts the battle of Argentoratum (Strasbourg) in 357 CE  in which the future emperor, Julian, repulsed an incursion of Alemanni it foreshadows the future death of Julian by Roman spear, first claimed as a battle wound by Christians in the emperor's entourage then later openly lauded in the mythology and iconology of Saint Mercurius slaying the last pagan emperor.
