The last generation of mortal men

Men will praise the evil-doer and his violent dealing. Strength will be right, and reverence will cease to be; and the wicked will hurt the worthy man, speaking false words against him, and will swear an oath upon them. Envy, foul-mouthed, delighting in evil, with scowling face, will go along with wretched men one and all. Hesiod describing the last generation of mortal men. Works and Days. Section 174.

Image: Marble Roman portrait of an Old Republican from the Vatican's Chiaramonti Museum (inv. 1751). The veiled ("velate") head probably belonged to a full-length togate statue. The garment probably indicates the depiction of a man (priest?) in the act of sacrifice. Dated by the museum to the second half of the first century B.C.E. courtesy of Sergey Sosnovskiy cc by sa.
