Carefulness and Intrepidity are hard to combine

It is hard to combine and unite these two qualities, the carefulness of one who is affected by circumstances, and the intrepidity of one who heeds them not. Epictetus. The Golden Sayings. Book 2. Number 186. Note: Epictetus goes on to compare these qualities to those found in a seafarer.
