Unjust slander

Victims of unjust slander have the greatest service rendered to them by anyone who will compel them to undergo an examination of the record of their lives. Lysias. For Mantitheus. Book 16. Section 1.

Bronze counterweight depicting a youthful Tiberius Roman 14-68 CE photographed at the
Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.

I selected this image because I think Tiberius was subjected to unjust slander in his later life when ancient sources claim he was guilty of all manner of perversions in his old age. I think propaganda generated against Caligula to justify his assassination slopped over onto Tiberius.

I explain my reasoning in my article on Roman Times entitled: "Sexual Innuendo and Character Assassination in the Ancient World."
